The lighting was bad and rswfire said so at the start, before anything else — an apology to the camera for conditions he could not fix and did not intend to work around. The house behind him had reached a state he described plainly as a disaster, accumulation dense enough that walking through it had become a matter of route-finding. He was recording inside it anyway, handheld, in whatever light the room gave him. The video would be short. He said that too, up front: this was the one post for the day, and after it he would be working.
The plan for the camper came first, because it existed. He had spent time in consultation with ChatGPT and had come out of it with a sequence for insulating the shell — not the whole shell, he specified, but the parts he could reach for now. He treated that partiality as sufficient rather than as a shortfall. Anything he could do would help. And the weather was warming, which shifted the margin in his favor without requiring anything from him. A start was a start.
He would sleep in the camper that night. His bed was there. His belongings were there. The cats slept there, and he wanted them to stay habituated to it — that's where we sleep, he said, that's our home. The house, by that accounting, had already stopped being the residence and become the object of the work: a volume of material to be reduced, a site to be cleared, a place he was in today only because there was so much left in it to deal with.
Then he marked a turn — quickly, just a personal note — and the second extraction came into the frame alongside the first. His parents had reacted very poorly to what he had posted. He stated it had not been his intention to hurt anyone. He had been trying to be authentic and to share his authentic experience of his life. He walked back through what he had actually said, and what he retrieved from it was his father: that his father had helped him, that his father is a good person, that his father does the best he can, the same as rswfire is doing the best he can. He left that in the record intact before he said the rest.
The rest was brief. Sometimes there is just no pleasing people, he said, and sometimes those people are family, and it gets to a point where you have to say this is hurting me too much and it's not worth it. So that's where I am. He set it directly beside the departure he was preparing — a new adventure, a new journey, a new life — and said he wanted to do it without the baggage. He said he loved them to death. He said he thought this was always going to be the end result, honestly. Then he stopped, having decided the matter, and did not return to it.
He closed by renegotiating the terms with the people watching. He would be in touch sometime tomorrow. He would not be posting every morning for a while. When there were major things to show, he would show them. There's just so much to do, he said, twice, and between the two he said I've got to get out of here. And then he named the forward environment, the one that did not exist yet: out on the road, in some park somewhere, waking up into a serene environment — and you can bet I'll have some things to say then. He wished them a good day and ended the recording, and the house was still there, and the work resumed.
