rswfire spent a couple of hours at the ocean before any of this was spoken aloud. The fog was heavy, the light gray, and he had the beach entirely to himself — no one else the whole time. He walked it up and back, up and back. At some point he held his phone toward the water and let it record for four minutes and eleven seconds, a length chosen because his birthday is April 11. Later he listened to a fragment of it and found the audio poor; his headphones had been plugged in, and the sound had not come through the way the morning had. He turned the question over without settling it — post it anyway, hold onto it, maybe set music to it one day, make something of it. He left the question open and did not force it closed.
The recording he did make came afterward, in a stationary setting, spoken directly into the camera. He opened by naming that he no longer knows how to open these. Hello, future audience — offered with the awareness that the video would land on his own website almost immediately, making the future a matter of hours, and the audience possibly an audience of one, possibly only himself. He mentioned a new channel, posted to once, started a couple of days earlier without much planning behind it. The scaffolding of publication was being built as he spoke, loosely, in the same breath as everything else.
Earlier in the week — he stated he genuinely could not remember which day — he had ended a channel, and his mind had gone back to Honeyman. It stayed there for the days that followed. Out of that return he wrote a letter to the director. He described telling her that he would publish it on his Honeyman page, so the letter itself would be visible. He described what he wanted her to understand: that he is not the threat, the truth is. He is not suing her. He does not expect anything from her, and he stated plainly that this is simply true — he expects nothing from anyone at that institution. What he did instead was make her sit with the moral weight of what happened to him. He described placing it in her hands and deciding to leave it there for now.
He named the for now explicitly. This is not the end, he said, because he does not know. He described his own architecture as recursive: he circles back to the thread not when something resolves but when alignment indicates the timing, and he knows when it is time. Okay, let's do this. Let's write her now. And the next return might carry something else entirely — a journalist, a watchdog organization, a legislative oversight committee. He named those paths as held, not spent. His stated reasoning was forward-looking rather than retributive: every day the people who abused him remain in their positions, the potential exists for them to do it to someone else.
His voice sharpened when he mapped the structure itself. They abused someone with no power there — no institutional backing, no one to go to when problems arise, no protection, not even payment. Free labor, disposable, removable at will, and it could be done to anybody. He named that as wrong without softening the word. Then he moved from the injury to the design flaw and proposed a remedy at the level of structure: volunteers may need their own unions, funded by the institutions that consume their labor. If you want free labor, pay for the protection you clearly cannot provide yourself.
Having said it, he set it down. He described having a lot of other things going on, and he listed them without dramatizing any of them: about twenty dollars in the bank, insurance lost on the Jeep and urgently needing to be paid, no clarity on what happens with the RV. He noted he was a little stressed. Then he drew the boundary that has held across audiences — his old audience did not understand, and he is not explaining. He was not explaining it now either. This is his situation, and he stated that he is navigating it as well as he can.
So, yeah. I'll leave it there. The letter is in the director's hands. The thread is sitting down, not finished. The video goes to the website. Somewhere on a phone, four minutes and eleven seconds of fog and water wait to see what they become.
