Morning, and the camera was already running. rswfire had been thinking about YouTube — how it had become part of his life without any particular decision to let it, two and a half months of it now, a thing that arrived and stayed. He spoke to the lens directly, the way he had been doing since the beginning, the frame close and domestic and unremarked, the location not the point. The point was the thought he had been turning over since the day before, when he started playing Minecraft.
The question surfaced fast, because he already knew the answer to the part that mattered. He had watched Minecraft videos for years. He knew who watched them. Kids played that game, kids watched that content, and his channel carried adult themes throughout — not incidentally, not in one corner of it, but as a condition of the whole. He did not want children finding their way in through a block-world door. His first move had been restriction: he locked the video down, required sign-in, made it difficult even to find. A gate rather than a fork.
Then he reconsidered the gate. Maybe that was the wrong approach, he said. Maybe the answer was a second channel — a place where he plays games, built for that purpose, separate at the root instead of walled off after the fact. So he made it. He named what he had done plainly: he had bifurcated himself. And he said, in the same breath, that he did not like the idea behind it. He had wanted a channel where he expressed his whole self, undivided, and here he was dividing.
He did not stay in the objection. He moved through it with a model he had carried since he was younger, back when he used to talk about crystals — how the light striking a crystal at one angle lights certain facets and leaves others dark, and a different angle lights different ones, and it is the same crystal throughout. He applied it directly: not everyone is into his hiking videos, not everyone will like his arts and crafts, and who knows what else he will do, because he truly does not know. He is exploring a lot of different things right now. So the decision followed the model rather than the discomfort — diversify, a channel for each interest, links in the comments, subscribe to whichever ones interest you.
The center held. The World According to Sam stays what it is: the daily vlog, where he talks about his life and his thoughts on life, his main channel. He expected some of that content would still land here, the dialogue kind, him talking about something he had done — but the doing itself would live elsewhere now, in its own container, findable by anyone who wanted to follow along.
He said he was excited about it and had not yet figured out why. Then he said the thing underneath it: that this takes courage for him, that it is true for everybody but for him it takes so much. He had thought about making a Minecraft channel before he left his house — months before he was even thinking about getting an RV — back when he was trying all kinds of different things and not pursuing them as far. He did not know what had changed in his brain. He offered one possibility: that this channel had helped, that the reception had been very largely positive, that it had made him more comfortable being himself and sharing it with others. He addressed the people watching directly and thanked them, and then said he truly meant it, and thanked them again.
