Two in the morning, and rswfire woke into the dark with a thought already fully formed. Not a fragment, not the residue of a dream — a structural recognition, arrived intact. He reached for the camera before anything else. No light, no preparation, no interval between the arriving and the recording. Just over eighty seconds, spoken low, in a sleeping space, into the quiet.
He named the waking first, as if setting the record straight about conditions. Two in the morning. The middle of the night, as sometimes happens. He said he knew how it was going to sound. He said he didn't care — that he wasn't awake enough to care. The disclaimer came and went in the same breath, and then he moved past it without waiting to see whether it had done its work. That was the shape of the whole transmission: awareness of reception, stated and then set down.
What he had woken with was a mechanism, and he described it mechanically. Gears. Downshifting — many gears, all the way down, until he reached the level where someone could follow. He had always done this. He explained why: because he could descend and they could not climb. I can downshift for you but you can't upshift for me. The asymmetry was not a complaint. It was a specification, and he stated it in the flat voice of someone reading an instrument.
Then came the part he had woken up for. Because of that asymmetry, he had assigned himself the entire labor of being understood. He had made comprehension his job — a one-directional contract he had authored, signed, and honored alone for as long as he could trace it. Saying it aloud, in the dark, at two in the morning, he heard how little sense it made. That makes no sense at all. He said he knew how he arrived there. He did not spend time defending the route.
The termination came fast, in short declaratives with long pauses around them. I'm done doing that. I'm done. Then the reassignment, stated as fact rather than accusation: it's not my fault that you don't understand me. And finally the forward condition, the thing that made this a boundary and not merely a recognition — if you want to understand me, you're going to have to work for it.
He stopped recording. The night went on around him, unlit and quiet. The gears were still there, and the ceiling above other people's reach was still where it had always been. What had changed was who was expected to climb.
